The day after the election, the the Tennessee Democratic Party (TNDP) disavowed the winner of their US Senate primary, Mark Clayton.
There are lots of explanations. None cast the TNDP in a positive light.
The TNDP said, “The only time that Clayton has voted in a Democratic primary was when he was voting for himself,” implying Clayton isn’t really a Democrat or at least not Democrat enough for long enough.
Tennessee’s Secretary of State website shows Clayton ran for Senate as a Democrat in both 2008 and 2012. One assumes he has been voting for himself – and as a Democrat – for years.
ABC reports an organization Clayton belongs to, Public Advocate of the United States, said Clayton, “… actively opposed every Republican nominee for President during his adult life.”
In a Tennessean video Clayton says he’s a Democrat, has supported Democrat candidates and has only voted for Democrats as an adult.
Any damaging youthful indiscretions with the GOP remain unreported so far. Perhaps they’ll be released as an October surprise. Nice to know there’s a probationary period to be a Tennessee Democrat. I wonder how long it takes?
Rather than take responsibility, in a stunning move, the TNDP blames Democrat voters! ”Many Democrats in Tennessee knew nothing about any of the candidates in the race, so they voted for the person at the top of the ticket.” It seems they believe their voters aren’t smart enough to vote well so their choices must be undone by the party.
Amazingly, the TNDP also blames their own candidates! Nooga.Com reports, “Before the election, we had heard some of this stuff about him, we just didn’t think he had that much of a shot,” [TNDP spokesman Sean] Braisted said. “This is a problem with Tennessee’s ballot … Most of the candidates were just crackpots.”
The real reason the TNDP threw their guy under a bus is because he dared to break with sacred Democrat dogma. Whatever else Clayton believes, this story broke with coverage by Mother Jones smearing Clayton as an anti-gay bigot for believing marriage is defined as between a man and a woman. While other positions of Clayton are noted around the Internet, the main objection is, as the TNDP presser’s only explanation for its action notes, “Mark Clayton is associated with a known hate group …”
Which brings us to the TNDP’s self immolation coup-de-grace.
The day before the election, the Nashville Business Journal ran a piece titled Chick-fil-A and the gamble of companies weighing in on controversy in connection with the impromptu and informal Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. The writer warns CEOs, “When a company’s top decision maker speaks publicly about something, the lines blur between a personal view and the company’s stance.”
This is even more applicable to politicians. The insight is completely lost on the TNDP.
The Chick-fil-A dust-up exploded not when the owners stated they held a traditional view of marriage. It exploded when Rahm Emanuel and Thomas Menino, mayors of Chicago and Boston – and Democrats – weighed in on the controversy to disrespect those holding such views.
The insult to their values and faith prompted hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Americans to publicly side with the Cathys, the owners of Chick-fil-A.
Well … the entire country except for the TNDP leadership. Just two days after that public declaration the TNDP used the exact issue as the justification for publicly disavowing their candidate who shared it along with almost 50,000 Tennessee Democrats who voted for him.
If the TNDP wants to advocate for gay marriage, fine. I disagree, but it has the right to have its say and believe what it will. But I would expect it would know how out of touch with the mainstream its views are. If it doesn’t, I would expect something like the Chick-fil-A event to get its attention.
But when your mascot is a jackass …

Good thoughts, Ken. Clayton is a throwback to the traditional Democrats who held vastly different views from the “Democrats” of today. Roosevelt and Kennedy would scarcely recognize the “Democratic Party”. It will eventually follow the Whig party into the history books.

I had a friend tell me something pretty similar just yesterday. He opined that the Democrats would implode and leave a vacuum for the rise of another party to perpetuate the “two party system.”
He seemed to think a party to the right of the GOP had a shot at the open slot …
There’s an interesting line of thought to pursue …

I find it increasingly appalling any group, business, etc. be it politically connected or a restaurant chain whose leaders or CEOs support traditional marriage and pro-life positions are automatically labeled “hate groups”. Doesn’t matter if they really “hate” or not. Now I know nothing about Public Advocate of the U.S. but I suspect they haven’t actually called for bombing an abortion clinic or beating a gay couple. They probably just support traditional, conservative views. Too bad that’s all it takes to be called a hate group these days.

Best summary of the problem I’ve seen yet, Jim.
Thanks!

Thank you for that point of view. “Hate” is a great way to demonize the enemy. God doesn’t hate homosexuals but it is true to say that he hates all forms of sin.

During this recent campaign, on a TNDP public, conference call, the question was asked to Chip Forester, Craig Fitzhugh and Mike Turner who were hosting the call: “In East Tennessee”, (where the caller claimed she resides) “why, in the Democratic Party caucus, is there so much racism?”
Mike Turner’s response was, “it’s because the Republicans, who used to be the party of Lincoln, have lost their way.”
Ah…am I living on a different planet, or is some type of cognitive disorder is occurring there?

Tony -
Either option is viable when dealing with the likes of Turner. However, I’m going with #2 personally …

Finally, the Democrats field a candidate that I am interested in knowing more about. I wish he would run for office in Davidson County where only Democrats get elected.

Well, different folks have tried the strategy of running as a member of the party which stands the best chance of getting them elected.
Others choose Independent so as to breeze past the Primary and go right to the General.
Generally speaking, though, such things are transparent ploys that only work now and then.
Clayton seems to be the sort of candidate we don’t see hardly anywhere any longer: a conservative Democrat. I honestly thought they were extinct.
Perhaps Tennessee could become a haven for them. I’d welcome a hearty debate among Conservatives from either party!

Ken:
You forgot about the famous “Low Tax Looper” fiasco in Putnam County a few years ago where a life-long Democrat ran as a Republican and then shot the Democratic incumbent. The TNDP made a lot of noise about this “Republican.” Interestingly, the TN Republican Party disavowed Looper long BEFORE the election.
PS Take a look at the Southern Poverty Center’s list of “Hate Groops.” Last time I checked there was one in Woodbury, TN – a place (the last time I checked) that didn’t even have a traffic light….

I remember the name “Low Tax Looper.” Didn’t recall the rest of the details.
I’ll go to the SPLC’s website and check out the list if you insist. But I’ll need to shower afterwards and I’m sending the bill for water and soap to you …
I’m just sayin’ …

LOVE the headline! One can hardly stop laughing at this whole situation. Seriously? The Dem’s excuse is some 50K of their membership were too stupid to vet the candidate themselves and just pulled the lever next to the first D they found? See, this is what you get when you encourage dependency and lockstep response. The Democrats manage to kick themselves while they’re down. Heckuva job there, Chris. Keep it up and Dems will be an endangered species in the legislature. Works for me!

That does seem to be their reasoning. Frankly, I cannot believe they would actually put something like that in print privately in an email or memo; let alone in a press release which they then send to the known universe!
But, as it is said, never interrupt your opponent when he’s making a mistake. It’s impolite …

If only they had a good litmus test like say…would he shake $55,000 John Ford’s hand?
